The Japanese flying squirrel represents a small, furry creature renowned for its tree-gliding abilities. Approximately human hand-sized, it features a gray or brown body, white belly, large eyes, and a bushy tail. Naturally nocturnal, it sleeps within tree cavities during daylight and emerges at night to consume nuts, seeds, and insects. These squirrels excel at gliding, soaring up to 100 feet by extending their limbs. They assist in controlling insect populations and serve as prey for birds of prey, fulfilling an important function in Japan's ecosystem.
