The Akita Inu is a giant breed from northern Japan’s mountains. Calm and reserved at a glance, they are large and powerful beneath that thick coat and curled tail. Akitas are loyal and affectionate with family, less so with strangers or other animals. Without socialization or training, they can be dangerous around people outside their circle. Extensive training reduces risks for many breeds on this list.
