The Shar-Pei, a southern Chinese breed, is known in the West for deep wrinkles, while Hong Kong Shar-Peis are less wrinkled. Ranked 64th by the AKC, their soft face, sturdy build, and wary stance toward strangers define them. In danger or confusion, they may revert to ancient instincts—alert, distant, and determined to fight until the threat passes.
