The USAF aircraft carrying the president uses Air Force One as their traffic control call signal. When the USAF started to worry about the safety of utilising commercial aircraft to carry the president, the idea of having a plane specially built for the purpose emerged in the early 1940s.

The C-54 Skymaster was the original Air Force One. The Boeing 747-8 aircraft has been selected as Air Force One's aircraft. In order to comply with security regulations, Boeing said in 2017 that it would transform two abandoned Transaero aircraft that were being kept in the Mojave Desert into Air Force One aircraft.
