7. The Burj Khalifa

Location: UAE's Dubai All in all, $1.5 billion 2010 is the finished year. There is nothing like the Burj Khalifa. Adrian Smith, a well-known architect, created the imposing building, which was developed by Emaar Properties. Reaching a height of 828 metres, it has transformed into a vertical metropolis and a symbol of contemporary architecture.

Offices, hotels, and residences are housed in the skyscraper. As lead structural engineer Bill Baker puts it, it "confuses the wind" because of its strategically placed central spine that reflects wind.
