This cache, dubbed the Whydah Gally Treasure, is still the only real pirate treasure ever found worldwide. The Whydah was launched in London, and "Black Sam" Bellamy, a notorious pirate who played a significant part in the Golden Age of Piracy, managed to seize it in the 1700s.

Black Sam's captured ship sank off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717. Those crew men who made it out of the shipwreck were promptly disciplined for piracy. For years, people searched for the Whydah Gally's riches, and it wasn't until 1984 that the wreck, hidden beneath fifty feet of sand, was found. At the time of the wreck, the pirates were carrying 10,000 pounds of gold, silver, gold dust, and jewellery, making the loot on board this wrecked pirate ship valued at $100 million.
