When your nails are not smooth, you might be missing zinc, calcium, or vitamin A, or you could be developing a skin disorder like eczema or psoriasis. Pitting, or small dents in the nail surface, is frequently connected to these conditions. These alterations can appear as tiny depressions or wave-shaped patterns. Psoriasis is recognized for creating nail pitting, and the extent of nail changes often corresponds with the severity of skin symptoms. Other disorders like alopecia areata and lichen planus can also create nail pitting. While proper nail care can help avoid additional damage, treatment generally concentrates on managing the root condition rather than the nail changes alone.
