Nail biting, and occasionally biting the nearby skin, is frequently a symptom of anxiety and can vary from a minor habit to a serious obsession. For some people, nail biting is simply a habit, but for others, it might indicate deeper problems that require addressing. Called onychophagia, this behavior impacts people of every age, particularly children and young adults. It can result in nail damage, infections, and even tooth problems. Continuous nail biting can also impact confidence and social relationships. Treatment might include cognitive behavioral therapy, habit-replacement training, and stress control methods. Some individuals benefit from using stress balls, fidget devices, or bitter-flavored nail polish. In extreme cases, consulting with a mental health specialist can help address the root causes.
